Now read the sentences and using the context try to guess meanings of the italics words. Give the definition of these words and word combinations.

-          The Internet consists of millions of computers, all linked together into a gigantic network.

-          These computers are equipped with special communication software.

-          An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that provides Internet service for a monthly charge.

-          Local ISPs connect to larger ISPs, which in turn connect to even larger ISPs.

-          A hierarchy of networks is formed.

-          The data, or information, in an e-mail message, a Web page, or a file is first broken down into tiny packets.

-          The router then decides the best route to send the packet on its way to its destination.

-          Imagine that you want to send a friend a book, but you can send it only as postcards.

-          Many postal agents may look at the addresses on the postcards in order to decide the best route to send them off on to reach their destination.

Now you will listen to the audio file. In this talk, the speaker explains how the Internet works, how the information travels over the Internet. The speaker uses an analogy, or comparison, to help explain the process. Now, let’s listen to the talk about what the Internet is and how it works. Just relax and listen carefully.

Let’s listen to the talk once more. This time the description of the Internet and how it works will be given in massage unites. Please repeat each of the sentences or phrases to yourself silently as you hear it spoken. Remember, do not repeat the units out loud.

Now you will listen to the other talk. This time take notes on what you hear.

You should answer his questions and explain to him one by one how the information in e-mail messages, Web pages, and downloaded files travel over the Internet and what computers and the Internet itself is. You can use your notes. Your task is to impress him by these technologies and persuade him to stay in your reality. Daniel, your task is yield to no persuasion.

Now you are continuing the international conference with Daniel. Let’s discuss why you agree or disagree with the sentences, I will tell you. If you agree with the sentence — seat at the side «Yes», if you are not agree with the sentence — seat at the side «No», if you are can’t determine your answer — seat at the side «Don’t know». Ok.
